Things to see

What's this?

This blog is where Matthew shares the nitty-gritty of what life is about, whether it be the optimal shade of tea, a review of a newly-released film, a passionate expose of theological doctrine, or just a rant about whatever is topical.

None of this blog should be taken seriously, unless otherwise indicated. The events described here and their real-life counterparts probably wouldn't get on at a party, so don't expect them to correlate easily.

Relational address book

For some time now I have been looking for a better solution to the basic and aged concept of the address book.  In the beginning we all used small books in which we wrote people’s addresses and phone numbers, ordered roughly by alphabetical order of surnames.  But of course with today’s reliance and power of technology, there is scope for far more from an address book application, making it more useful and more efficient too.  I’m not going to even think of creating this myself, partly because I’m lazy and have better things to do, and partly because I know there are far better programmers out there who could do the job far more elegantly.  However, I am willing to share my idea with you all, in the hope that this might serve as inspiration for someone to actually create my ideal address book program.

Married!

Yes folks, it’s finally happened.  I’m married.

YAY!!!!!!!!!

It’s been a week and a day, and it’s still only beginning to really sink in, I have to admit.  The wedding itself was wonderful – almost exactly what we had both planned, despite the rain.  The service went without a hitch, I got all my lines right, no one tripped over or ruined the atmosphere, and I smiled all the way through!  It wasn’t exactly a traditional wedding, we knew that from the start, but instead reflected our own individuality and randomness by the way we chose to do things throughout the day.  Ellie’s entrance music was something from ‘Fiddler on the roof’, which set the mood for the rest of the day really!

Charge!

For some time now Neddy has been having problems starting.  Despite a longish run the battery would be flat, and the engine would hardly turn over.  Most of the time there has still been just about enough charge to start the engine, if reluctantly, but there have also been a couple of times when it’s failed, and this morning was one of those occasions.  Not great timing, considering I’m due to be driving across the country to get married this weekend.  There were several possible causes to the battery charge problem, one of which was the battery itself, and other main possibility being the alternator, and I could find no sure fire way of finding out which it was more likely to be or how to find out for sure, and neither looked particularly cheap to replace.

Online again

After a brief pause, my internet connection is now back in full swing.  I had submitted a house move request Eclipse, who provide my connection, and they managed to make it all work just fine, and even kept to schedule!  Once again, hats off to Eclipse for a brilliant service.

It wasn’t all plain sailing though, sadly, but that was more my fault than anyone else’s.  Having moved my whole office from my old house to the new on Wednesday, the intention was to connect to the net via a Linksys wireless router (which I bought by mistake a while ago thinking it was an all-in-one jobby, which it wasn’t) and a BT Voyager 210 broadband modem (bought cheap on eBay).  In theory that should have worked fine, but of course it’s technology and so there were inevitably problems…

Most embarrassing day ever?

Yesterday was my stag party, which was organised completely by my Best Man, Ian.  It was something I had been looking forward to, and yet at the same time dreading!  Having shared a house with Ian for a couple of years I know he knows me pretty well, and as a result I know I can trust him not to go too far, so there was no risk of drinks being spiked or of me being tied to a lamppost or sent abroad… still, there was always the worry about what else might be introduced into the mix to make it interesting!  I may not have been at any risk of getting hideously drunk, but that didn’t mean I’d be completely safe…

The humanity of Christ

In my Bible study this morning my commentary was expounding on part of Hebrews that talks about Jesus as our High Priest, and how Christ suffered to be able to perfectly sympathise with our suffering, and in so doing more completely comfort us.  He was completely human, experienced the same challenges, the same temptations, the same sort of sufferings, and because of that we can draw nearer to God.

I’m not so sure I agree.  At least, not in full.
