Things to see

What's this?

This blog is where Matthew shares the nitty-gritty of what life is about, whether it be the optimal shade of tea, a review of a newly-released film, a passionate expose of theological doctrine, or just a rant about whatever is topical.

None of this blog should be taken seriously, unless otherwise indicated. The events described here and their real-life counterparts probably wouldn't get on at a party, so don't expect them to correlate easily.

Shine again, Jesus, Shine again!

Well, I’ve had an interesting morning today, not doing any work of any kind at all. I spent all my time playing around with multi-track recording! I’ve got a few items of recording equipment here, most of which is on loan from Andy C (who is away in Oz at the moment). There’s a nice SM58 microphone, and a mixer, and a motley assortment of cables, plus a clever little preamp box of mine that’s got a compressor and an EQ on it (though I don’t really know how to use the compressor part, so I leave that alone). Recording onto my Mac is good too, as it’s pretty much crystal clear, as opposed to the hideously noisy input of my PC. I’m using a piece of software called Audacity, which is a free multi-track recording program. So to test it all out I decided to record myself playing an arrangement of Shine Jesus Shine that I did a few weeks ago, which aimed to take a song that everyone thought of as cheesy and make it into something fresh and modern. I’m actually quite pleased with it – the recording quality isn’t too bad (clips a bit in places where I had the mic up too high), and it’s mostly in tune! The only thing it’s really missing is some drums, simply because I didn’t happen to have a set of drums handy at the time! But I’ve got a guitar track, a bass track, and two vocals (all me of course). If you want to listen, I’ve put it up on the web – Shine Jesus Shine. Do leave your comments, let me know what you think of it.
